Erica Howard is Professor of law at Middlesex University in London. She has conducted extensive research in the area of freedom of religion and religious discrimination and has published a completely updated and revision second edition of her book on ‘Law and the Wearing of Religious Symbols in Europe’ in 2020, covering both the ECHR and the EU law and case law. She has also written a number of articles on the ECJ case law on bans on the wearing of the Islamic headscarves at work. Her article about the opinion of Advocate General Rantos and the shadow opinion of former Advocate General Sharpston in the joined cases of IX v Wabe eV, and MH Müller Handels GmbH v MJ, entitled “Headscarves and the CJEU: Protecting fundamental rights or pandering to prejudice?”, is due to be published by the Maastricht Journal of European and Comparative Law soon.
