Hans Vedder graduated from the University of Groningen in 1997. In 1998 he started writing his Ph.D. thesis on Competition Law and Environmental Protection with the Centre for Environmental Law of the University of Amsterdam (defended in 2003). In 2001 he became a lecturer with the Department of European and Economic Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen, where he was appointed Professor of Economic Law in 2009. Hans specialises in (EU) competition law and EU environmental law, with a focus on energy law and he tries to keep up with EU law in general. He is a member of the Advisory Committee on Appeals to the Competition Act and Honorary Judge in the Leeuwarden Appeals Court and he is frequently consulted by law firms, corporations and government institutions.
